During this season of Thanksgiving, let us be thankful for:
—parents of children with disabilities and adults with disabilities
who are rejecting the “medical model” of disability and
choosing to live natural lives as citizens, instead of clients;
—educators who implement the spirit and intent of IDEA
(Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) by providing an
inclusive education for all students with disabilities;
—professionals in the disability field who assist people with
disabilities to achieve interdependence in the community,
instead of dependence on the service system;
—leaders in cities and towns who ensure people with
disabilities are included in all aspects of life in the community;
—every person who is embracing the concept that disability
is natural and taking steps to ensure that all men, women,
boys, and girls with disabilities experience the bounty,
freedom, and choice which are enjoyed by Americans
without disabilities.
And in this season of Thanksgiving, my personal hope is
that each of us will do whatever it takes to reach out to our
brothers and sisters with disabilities, and make room at our
tables and in our hearts, so that no one with a disability
spends Thanksgiving Day alone.
