Purpose
To serve people with special needs who, because of physical, medical, cognitive, social, communication, or emotional challenges who may require assistance both inside and outside the mainstream of community services.
Vision
New Canaan will be a proactive and supportive community, which embraces people with disabilities.
Mission
ACCESS New Canaan will take the lead in advancing this vision by providing leadership in all areas of concern related to people with disabilities in New Canaan.
Goals
- Coordinate, support and promote the effective delivery of services to people with special needs
- Advocate for individuals with disabilities and their families at all levels of the government and community
- Develop effective special needs oriented programming through collaboration and networking of community services and other concerned organizations
Strategies
- Cultivate relationships with direct service agencies, other planning and/or funding organizations, civic groups and service clubs, children and families, local businesses, schools and religious groups
- Establish a relationship with the media in order to promote and communicate with the public regarding services for people with special needs
- Evaluate existing and proposed services in New Canaan and other towns.
- Participate in the local Human Services Commission
- Provide education, easy access to information, and heighten public awareness and support
Outcomes
- New Canaan will have a continuous exchange and dissemination of information regarding residents with special needs
- New Canaan will have cooperation and networking among all groups concerned with residents with special needs
- New Canaan will be able to mobilize necessary resources for the community
- New Canaan public officials will be informed regarding special needs
- New Canaan will be a community in which persons with disabilities are supported, empowered, and fully embraced
