Teaching Your Child Self-Advocacy—Thursday, January 16, 2014

Come hear a panel of attorneys, parents and educators discuss best practice in teaching self- advocacy to your child from the early years through transition to adulthood. Sponsored by SCOPES and Abilis.

Panelists:

Susan Chandler, Stamford Public Schools, Special Education Teacher; Dr. Angie Chai, Director of Youth Behavioral Services at Abilis; Gerri Fleming, Special Education Advocate; Ida Lupinacci, Early Intervention Associate at Abilis; Jeanne Buckley Peloso, Parent Advocate; and Anne Treimanis, Esq.

Susan Chandler: Special Education teacher employed by the Stamford Public Schools for the past 35 years.  She has a master degree in Special Education and 6th year degree in administration.  She has worked with students of varying disabilities over her many years of experience.  Her experience includes working with students in self contained classes teaching content, co-teaching inclusion and resource support intervention.  She served as Special Ed Department Head at Stamford High School for 6 years.  Her passion is to provide inclusive opportunities for our special ed students within social related activities and has developed a “best buddies” type program at SHS known as “Friendly Faces”. schandler@ci.stamford.ct.us

Dr. Angie Chai: Dr. Chai is a certified school psychologist and the Director of Youth Behavioral Services at Abilis. Her work at Abilis focuses on providing behavioral interventions, family consultations, and evaluations for children with Autism and other developmental disabilities.  Dr. Chai is also an adjunct professor at Fordham University’s Graduate School of Education where she teaches courses in therapeutic interventions and child development. chai@abilis.us

Gerri Fleming: Special Education Advocate. Gerri is a former high school history teacher.  She is a graduate of COPAA’s Special Education Advocacy Training program and has been advocating professionally for the past seven years.  Gerri has a teenage son on the autism spectrum. www.ctadvocacy.com

Ida Lupinacci: Early Intervention Associate at Abilis. Ida is also a Parent Partner for the Medical Home Initiative South West Region. She also serves on SCOPES and also the Stamford Parent Advisory Board for special education issues. Ida has not only insured that her son Joe, who lives with Down syndrome, is successfully included in general education classes, but she has helped countless of parents do the same. lupinacci@abilis.us

Jeanne Buckley Peloso: Parent Advocate. Jeanne Buckley Peloso is the mother of two, one of whom is a teenage son on the Autism Spectrum.  She is a graduate of the Parent Leadership Training Institute and has taught the Parents as Partners curriculum. She was named Parent of the Year at the Glenholme School in 2013. She was a founding board member and former president of SCOPES and is focusing now on independent housing solutions for young adults with special needs. Jeanne worries every day that she has not taught her son how to self advocate well enough to get through life successfully.  jbpeloso@gmail.com.  

Dorothy Taffet: Teacher at Winston Prep in Norwalk.

Attorney Treimanis: Law practice is limited to Special Education and disability discrimination issues. Anne Treimanis is the co-author of IEP and Inclusion Tips. Professor Treimanis teaches law to graduate students at St. Joseph University. She is a popular presenter, not only throughout the United States, but internationally as well.
