New Balance and SPED*NET to Team up and Walk for Autism
New Balance of New Canaan and SPED*NET New Canaan are reaching out to the community to help individuals with Autism have a safe, sensory friendly place to build fitness and health.
On Friday, August 26, 2011 at 6:00pm, New Balance of New Canaan, presents the third annual “All Out for Autism”, a 5k and 1k walk/run for Autism, co-sponsored by SPED*NET New Canaan. Beginning at the New Balance store, 128 Main Street, New Canaan, the course will run through downtown New Canaan and terminate at the parking lot across from the store for awards and prizes provided by New Balance.
The idea was spawned in 2009 by New Balance owners Ron and Tina Rosenfeld who were surprised at the number of individuals with Autism who came into the store. In their ongoing efforts to give back to the community, Ron and Tina saw an opportunity to extend their mission of health and fitness into the community. In August 2009, the first race was successfully held. Ron and Tina have a long history of promoting health and fitness in the community. As owners of the Athletes Foot on Summer Street in Stamford for the past 25 years, they have sponsored many fundraisers, including Wheelchair Athletes. Their efforts have been instrumental in raising awareness and money for a variety of organizations.
The third annual “All Out for Autism” fundraiser in New Canaan is the second event to raise money to provide a safe, sensory friendly fitness facility in New Canaan for all individuals to enjoy, with particular attention to those individuals with Autism. SPED*NET assessed the facilities currently available to the New Canaan community, with regard to the accessibility and enjoyment of those individuals with special needs. The fitness path will be located in Waveny Park. Plans to create a challenge/fitness path have been established. SPED*NET expects to break ground this fall!
All proceeds will go toward building a challenge/fitness area in New Canaan that will meet the needs of all in the community to enjoy and to promote fitness and healthy living for adults, children, teens and seniors, including those with special needs. The first pieces of equipment on the walk will be unveiled soon. The hope is that subsequent Walk/Run events will contribute to additions and maintenance of the course.
The event promises fun and prizes. Registration will be held at the New Balance store, 128 Main Street, New Canaan, CT
