Sexuality and Intimacy for People with Intellectual Disabilities

On Tuesday, March 19, 2013, national speaker and author, Leslie Walker-Hirsch will be leading a day-long conference on  Sexuality and Intimacy for People with Intellectual Disabilities. The event will take place at NORWALK CITY HALL, 125 East Avenue, Norwalk, CT – in the community room. This conference is a must for teens and young adults with intellectual disabilities, their families, and the health professionals and educators who work with them.

Making good decisions about sexuality is a critical part of adulthood, but sometimes people with intellectual disabilities do not get the support or education they need to navigate this complex aspect of life.

For more than 25 years, Leslie Walker-Hirsch has assisted teens and adults with intellectual disabilities and their families understand sexuality and disability. She has also helped state agencies, law enforcement, and the courts deal more effectively with this population. She offers guidance in developing a responsible expression of sexuality for Individuals with intellectual disabilities. Leslie’s book, The Facts of Life …and More: Sexuality and Intimacy for People with Intellectual Disabilities will be discussed at the upcoming seminar.

With this frank, thorough presentation, professionals, parents and others will learn to better advocate for people with disabilities and help them reap the social and emotional benefits of healthy, responsible, age-appropriate sexuality. Participants with disabilities will sharpen their self-advocacy skills.  Attendees will learn to expand their view of sexuality education and to understand how important this education is for self-protection and for a high quality of life.

PLEASE NOTE NEW LOCATION!!! The location of this day long conference will be at Norwalk City Hall in Norwalk, CT. It will start at 8:45am and run until 2:15pm.  The $35 fee is to include a continental breakfast and lunch. Individuals with intellectual disabilities must register and their admission is complimentary..

The conference is being sponsored by SPED*NET, Special Education Network of New Canaan, Ltd.; STAR, Inc., Lighting the Way; Norwalk Hospital’s Pediatric, Development and Therapy Center; and  New Canaan Public Schools. Parking is free in the Norwalk City Hall parking lots in the back and side of the building.

The building entrance is on the side of the building closest to I-95.

The Community Room is on the first floor. 

From the building entrance, proceed to the information desk in the rotunda, on the right side rotunda is Blue Sign “Veteran’s Hallway”.  

Proceed down the hallway to the end.  Last door on the left is the Community Room.

A handicap accessible entrance is the last door straight ahead past the Community Room doorway.

 Directions to Norwalk City Hall:
From I-95 Heading South

  1. Take Exit 16 – East Avenue.
  2. Turn right onto East Avenue.
  3. At the first light (Eversley Avenue), take a right.
  4. Take the first left onto City Hall Drive.
  5. City Hall is straight ahead.

From I-95 Heading North

  1. Take Exit 16 – East Avenue.
  2. Turn left onto East Avenue.
  3. At the second light (Eversley Avenue), take a right.
  4. Take the first left onto City Hall Drive.
  5. City Hall is straight ahead.

From Merritt Parkway (Route 15) Heading South

  1. Take Merritt Parkway south to Exit 40 – Main Avenue.
  2. Turn right at the light at the end of ramp.
  3. Go approximately three lights to the entrance of Route 7 Connector.
  4. Get on Route 7 Connector heading toward Norwalk.
  5. Get off heading toward I-95 North.
  6. Get off at Exit 16.
  7. At the end of the ramp, turn left onto East Avenue.
  8. At the second light (Eversley Avenue), turn right.
  9. Take the first left onto City Hall Drive.
  10. City Hall is straight ahead.

From Merritt Parkway (Route 15) Heading North

  1. Take Merritt Parkway north to Exit 39A.
  2. Continue on connector until I-95 North (Bridgeport) Exit (left side).
  3. Stay on I-95 until Exit 16 – East Avenue.
  4. Turn left onto East Avenue.
  5. At the second light (Eversley Avenue), turn right.
  6. Take the first left onto City Hall Drive.
  7. City Hall is straight ahead.
