February 2012: February 3- May 4—Fridays (12 sessions). Birth – 12 months: 10:00 am – 10:45 am. One-Three Years:  11:00 am – 11:45 am. Music Circles Playgroup for Mommy & Me at Arts for Healing, 24 Grove Street, New Canaan, for children ages birth to three. A playgroup offering opportunities for self-expression and socialization through music, designed to promote loving and joyful bonds that develop when sharing music together.  The sessions will focus on movement, singing and instrumental activities, all designed to enhance children’s communication skills and physical development.  All children have the   ability to enjoy music, feel rhythm, and respond to different musical patterns.  Feeling a beat and responding to music, not only affects spatial awareness, but also builds confidence and helps with sensory integration. Being comfortable with vocalization at an early age gives the very young child further motivation to communicate.  Expressive language and speech are always easier when used with music.  The use of improvisation within the music group allows for individualized songs and activities that target specific goals.  Drums and small percussion instruments will be used to enhance participation.  Fee: $250.00 per child for 12 one-hour sessions, $100 for additional child from same family.  Payment due at time of registration.  For further information please contact us at (203) 972-2982 or carol@artsforhealing.org.

February 29, 2012: 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm. How to Develop Resilience and Self-Esteem in Your Child/The Southfield Center Parent Lecture Series. Over the past two decades, psychologists have reported a troubling increase in the frequency of stress disorders in children. One personality characteristic that is often examined as a predictor of a child’s reaction to stress is the child’s “resilience”, or the ability of a child to adapt successfully despite adversity. Common wisdom has often maintained that by providing a nurturing and positively reinforcing environment that the child will develop resilience and healthy self-esteem. Current research, however, calls this wisdom into question and finds that all praise is not created equal. Dr. Christopher Bogart will discuss current findings on the connection between praise and resilience, and will explain research-proven ways to develop resilience in your child. Location: The Southfield Centerfor Development, 85 Old Kings Highway North, Darien, CT. Please contact Christi Zacarola to reserve your seat,203-202-7654,christi.zacarola@southfieldcenter.com.

March 7, 2012: 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm. Growth through Bumps in the Road: How Children Become Optimistic Problem Solvers/The Southfield Center Parent Lecture Series One of the classic theories of development is that “there is no growth without conflict.” Development at any stage from infancy through adulthood occurs as a function of our ability to resolve conflicts. Stemming from the work on emotional development and resiliency discussed by Dr. Bogart in his February parent workshop, Dr. Jeffrey DeTeso and Dr. Timothy Heitzman will discuss how conflicts give children opportunities to develop cognitive and academic skills. As parents and psychologists, they review practical, adaptive strategies that appropriately support children through the struggles and conflicts they experience at various stages, leading to optimistic problem solving and greater success. Location: The Southfield Center for Development, 85 Old Kings Highway North, Darien, CT. Please contact Christi Zacarola to reserve your seat, 203-202-7654, christi.zacarola@southfieldcenter.com.

New Website!!! Focus on Norwalk!!! www.apecsct.org As a parent of a child facing challenges I have come to realize that our self-education and increased awareness of our child’s special circumstances and the process that we have to work within are the keys to ensuring that our children receive the appropriate education and emotional supports that they need and to which they are entitled. I know what it is like to be searching for answers only to be held back by not knowing which way to turn for them. Toward that end, I have attempted to create a portal of information that might be useful to other parents as they begin this search. They must understand that beyond this website there are many other resources for them to increase their understanding and knowledge of special education laws as they pertain to their child’s needs. These will come in the form of specialized websites, books, magazines, workshops, and informational sessions. They should consider joining specialized organizations in order to keep up to date on their specific areas of interest. In addition, one of the most valuable resources would be the parents of other ‘exceptional children’ such as your own. You will find that there is a special kinship among these parents – many of whom have travelled the very path you are on now. Most of these parents are quite willing to share their experiences and knowledge. In the meantime, I am pleased to offer you this tiny first step and wish you luck on your journey. M.Jeffry Spahr
