September 7, 2010: Looking to the Future - Changes in Service Delivery for Young Children at Risk for Autism. Tuesday, 7 - 8pm. Greenwich Library, Cole Auditorium: 101 West Putnam Ave.
Speaker: Ami Kin, PhD, Director, Autism Program, Harris Professor of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, Yale Child Study Center. In the past five years, much has been learned about infants and toddlers who develop autism. More recently, novel technologies have been created to identify risk for autism in the first year of life. With these developments, universal screening for autism (recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics) could become a reality. Early intervention is shown to considerably improve outcomes, yet it will also pressure the capacity of those who provide this service. Learn more about how scientists and community providers together can provide a workable solution so that children can be treated early and appropriately by a properly staffed therapeutic system. Registration required. Please call 203-863-3627  or  888-357-2409 or register online. FREE. Sponsored by The Yale Child Study Center.

I am thrilled to announce Abilis’ new program at the University of Connecticut’s Stamford campus for young adults with autism and related disorders.
The year-round program, under my direction, is the first of its kind in our area. It will provide transitional, vocational, educational and community exploration training - all highly individualized — in a downtown college setting for students between the ages of 18 and 24.
The Abilis program will give commuting students:

·         An on-campus experience in a college atmosphere
·         Opportunities to interact and work with college students
·         Community integration activities around campus
·         Daily practical training in public transportation, shopping/eating out and community/pedestrian safety.
·         Employment/volunteer placement opportunities
·         Semester-driven goals with a Certificate of Completion
The program is designed to help young people with Autism, PDD, Asperger’s Syndrome, or related disorders reach their highest level of independence as they begin to move into the adult world.
Abilis, formerly known as ARC, has served people with developmental disabilities and their families since 1951. The Abilis Autism Program was created 12 years ago to focus on the unique strengths and needs of individuals with this diagnosis. Senior staff members of the Abilis Autism Program have more than 20 years of experience in the field of autism, providing guidance and support to families across lower Fairfield and Westchester counties.
