Mapping of mangrove forest land cover change along the Kenya Coastline using Landsat imagery. Rapid losses of surface elevation following tree girdling and cutting in tropical mangroves. Comparative performance of wild juvenile mud crab (Scylla serrata) in different culture systems in East Africa: effect of shelter, crab size and stocking density. Below-ground root yield and distribution in natural and replanted mangrove forests at Gazi bay, Kenya. National Museums of Kenya, Department of Zoology, Section of Herpetology *Author of correspondence: dvw. A study of reptiles and amphibians of the forest ecosystem was conducted with a view to determine their distribution and abundance across vegetation types. The vegetation types included mixed montane forest, bamboo zone and sub-alpine heath. The methods used included time-limited searches, pitfall trapping and opportunistic sampling. A total of 10 species including three amphibians and seven reptiles were recorded. Species richness declined from mixed montane forest to the bamboo and sub-alpine heath. Degraded forest sites tended to have fewer populations of reptiles and amphibians than intact zones. The study suggests that degradation of herpetofaunal habitats poses a serious conservation challenge for reptiles and amphibians in this forest ecosystem. Key words: Distribution, abundance, reptiles, amphibians, Mt Elgon forest Introduction the forests of East Africa are generally thought to consist of two non-overlapping herpetofauna. These include the twin assemblages of an eastern extension of the CongoGuinean forest block stretching from Cameroon to western Kenya and the Eastern Arc Mountains and the East African coastal forests. Despite pressures such as human population increase leading to forest loss as demand for agricultural land increases, detailed studies of these globally biodiversity hotspots have only progressed slowly in the last few decades. Anecdotal reports indicate that the remnant forests of East Africa are important refuges for reptiles and amphibians. The studies that have examined the herpetofauna of the Congolean block associated forests in East Africa include those by Loveridge (1935, 1942a, 1942b, 1957). These eastern relicts include the transboundary Mt Elgon ecosystem and Kakamega Forest in Kenya, besides Budongo, Bwamba, Kibale, Bwindi and Mabira in Uganda. Some of the recent attempts to address this gap the herpetofauna of Bwindi in southwestern Uganda and Kakamega Forest have been inventoried (Lцtters et al. In this report the herpetofaunal diversity in four distinct eco-climatic zones is examined in Mt Elgon ecosystem. It is against this background the present study was initiated as part of a broader biodiversity assessment. This study aimed to determine the distribution and influence of vegetation on herpetofauna assemblages. It was predicted that there is change in amphibian and reptile composition along the eco-climatic zones. Methods Sampling of amphibians and reptiles was carried out for a period of 12 days from 4th to 16th May 2017. A stratified approach based on four eco-climatic zones in Mt Elgon was used in selecting sampling locations namely: natural forest, bamboo, sub-alpine and alpine zones. In each zone, systematic searches were carried out along each transect by a team of two researchers walking at a speed of 1 km/hr. All possible amphibian and reptile microhabitats such as wetlands, under leaves debris, on trees, decomposing tree stumps and logs were intensively searched for one man hour per sample. To supplement the search efforts, trapping with pitfalls along drift fences was employed: X-shaped drift fence/pitfall trap arrays (Corn, 1994) with segments of 5m length were used. The pitfall traps consisted of 5 l plastic buckets flush with the ground; with a total of five (5) buckets in every trap station.

Recommendations regarding the use of medication by prospective blood donors are addressed in Section 6 cholesterol definition simple 10mg rosuvastatin. Recommendations Accept Individuals with common skin conditions cholesterol medication ezetrol quality 10mg rosuvastatin, such as: - Mild eczema - Mild acne - Mild psoriasis provided lesions are not infected cholesterol rda generic rosuvastatin 10 mg, there are no systemic symptoms cholesterol test good bad buy rosuvastatin 10 mg, the venepuncture site is unaffected and they have not received immunosuppressive 170 or retinoid treatment; long-term low-dose antibiotic treatment for acne is not a contraindication to blood donation Individuals with burns, when fully healed Defer Individuals with: - Psoriasis with infected lesions, systemic symptoms, affected venepuncture site or receiving immunosuppressive or retinoid treatment - Generalized skin disease(s) on systemic medication - Contagious skin diseases such as scabies and ringworm until cleared; while not a blood safety risk, there is a potential risk to blood collection staff Defer permanently Individuals with systemic diseases affecting the skin, such as: - - - - Scleroderma Systemic lupus erythematosus Dermatomyositis Systemic cutaneous amyloidosis 5. Recommendations Accept Individuals with anxiety disorders or mood (affective) disorders. Decision-making process the Guideline Development Group agreed on the following recommendations based on the above references, and on their medical knowledge and experience from best practice. Decision-making process the Guideline Development Group therefore recommended endorsement of currently accepted recommendations based on published literature, medical principles and experience from best practice. In the absence of any such evidence, the Guideline Development Group based their recommendations on their medical knowledge and experience from best practice. These recommendations are endorsed, although the work of Park et al suggests that they may be overly precautionary. Recommendations regarding the use of aspirin and related drugs are based on well-documented knowledge of the effects of these drugs on platelet function. Recommendations for the deferral of prospective donors following transfusion are therefore consistent with other risk factors for infection. The Guideline Development Group agreed on the following recommendations based on their medical and scientific knowledge and experience from best practice. Decision-making process There is no published evidence of transfusion-transmitted infection from a donor who was the recipient of a tissue transplant. In view of the theoretical risk, the Guideline Development Group agreed that the same recommendations should be applied as for recipients of labile blood components. Digestive endoscopy is not a major risk factor for transmitting hepatitis C virus. The Guideline Development Group agreed on the following recommendations based on a precautionary deferral period of 12 months. Recommendations Defer Individuals who have undergone: - Minor diagnostic procedures including rigid endoscopy: defer until they have resumed normal activity - Invasive diagnostic procedures using flexible endoscopy: defer for 12 months Question What deferral period should be applied to prospective blood donors who have undergone a recent surgical procedure, including dental treatment? Bacteremia following surgical dental extraction with an emphasis on anaerobic strains. Decision-making process There is no published evidence to guide recommendations regarding recent minor or major surgical procedures. The Guideline Development Group therefore agreed on the following recommendations based on the above studies and on their medical knowledge and experience from best practice. Recommendations Defer Individuals who have undergone: - Minor surgical procedures: defer until treatment is complete and successful and they have resumed normal activity - Major surgery: defer for 12 months - Dental treatment: defer for 24 hours following simple procedures and up to 7 days following endodontic procedures (root canal therapy) or extraction 7 7. However, sexual contact is one of the main routes of infection among adolescents and adults in areas of low endemicity. In addition, direct blood contact in the household environment, from needlestick injuries and sharing of items, has resulted in transmission between partners and other household contacts. Based on the available evidence, and their medical and scientific knowledge and expertise, the Guideline Development Group agreed on the following recommendations. Prevention of transfusion-transmitted hepatitis E by donor-initiated self exclusion. However, the retrospective reporting of diagnosed infections in the month following donation may prevent the issue of products that may transmit infection and/or enable the monitoring of treatment of recipients of such donations. The Guideline Development Group agreed on the following recommendations, based on the above papers, their medical and scientific knowledge, and experience from best practice. The Guideline Development Group agreed on the following recommendations based on the above mentioned papers, their medical and scientific knowledge and experience from best practice. The appearance of circulating virus also coincides with that of circulating antibody. The Guideline Development Group agreed on the following recommendations based the above mentioned studies, on their medical and scientific knowledge and experience from best practice. The transmission of other herpes viruses is not unknown, but not commonly reported.
